Asheville Savings Bank, chartered in 1936, has 13 banking centers and approximately 165 employees in the counties of Buncombe, Henderson, McDowell, Madison and Transylvania in western North Carolina. It is the oldest, locally managed, financial institution in Buncombe County.

Suzanne S. DeFerie has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Asheville Savings Bank since January, 2008 and its holding company, ASB Bancorp, Inc since its incorporation in May, 2011. Prior to becoming CEO, Ms. DeFerie was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the Bank for 16 years. A native of Lenoir, North Carolina, she is a graduate of Appalachian State University, holds a CPA license and was employed by Deloitte and Touche as a Senior Audit Manager prior to joining Asheville Savings Bank in 1991. 

Ms. DeFerie is active in the Asheville community, currently serving as Vice Chair for Economic Development of the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce board, Co-Chair of the 2011 Asheville 5x5 Economic Development campaign, Chair-Elect of the United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County Board of Directors, 2010 United Way Campaign Chair, Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity, member of the board of trustees of the Mission Healthcare Foundation and a member of the Finance Council for the Basilica of St. Lawrence. She is also a graduate of Leadership Asheville, former board member of the Black Mountain Center Foundation and is a past president of the Asheville Breakfast Rotary Club.

David Kozak began his banking career in Scranton Pennsylvania 25+ years ago and has served in both regional banks such as PNC, BB&T, SunTrust, and several community banks. His areas of expertise include Commercial, Mortgage, Consumer, and Business lending, business development, and training.

Mr. Kozak serves as a current member of the Asheville Rotary Club and Leadership Asheville. He also is a board member for The Health Adventure, American Red Cross and Avista Business Development Corp. He has also served as Past President of the Hickory Kiwanis Club, Past President (two terms) and Treasurer for Kiwanis Club of East Burke.

Fred Martin joined Asheville Savings Bank in June 2006 and has served as Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer since June 2007. Prior to joining the bank Mr. Martin served as North Carolina Lead Network Engineer and Assistant Director of Information Technology for South Trust Bank in North Carolina.

Kirby Tyndall has 29 years of experience in the financial and public accounting industries. Kirby will be responsible for managing the bank’s financial and fiscal direction, including preparing budgets and financial reports and recommending financial strategy.

A native of North Carolina, Mr. Tyndall received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Barton College and his M.B.A. from Lenoir-Rhyne University. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants.
